Salvation and Repentance

 SALVATION & REPENTANCE

Lesson 2

OBJECTIVE

The student should understand the importance of our SALVATION and the only step to having it.

AIMS  By the end of this session the student should be able to explain:

1. What SALVATION is.

2. The one step to SALVATION.

3. Who is THE ONLY WAY to heaven.

4. How people SHOULD RESPOND to Jesus Christ sacrifice.

WHAT IS SALVATION?

What is the Christian doctrine of salvation?"

1. Answer: Salvation is deliverance from danger or suffering. To save is to deliver and protect.

2. The word carries the idea of victory, health, or preservation.

3. The word “salvation” concerns an eternal and  spiritual  deliverance.

When Paul told the Philippian jailer what he must do to be saved, he was referring to the jailer’s eternal destiny (Acts 16:30-31).  Jesus equated being saved with entering the kingdom of God (Matthew 19: 24-25)

What are we saved from?

· In the Christian doctrine of salvation, we are saved from “wrath,” that is, from God’s judgment of sin (Romans 5:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:9).

· Our sin has separated us from God, and the consequence of sin is death (Romans 6:23).  Biblical salvation refers to our death from the                  consequence of sin and  therefore involves the removal of sin.

Who does the saving?

Only God can remove sin and deliver us from sin’s penalty . (2 Timothy 1:9;   Titus 3:5).

How does God save?

·  In the Christian doctrine of salvation, God has rescued us through Christ.  (John 3:17).

·  Specifically, it was Jesus’ death on the cross (His Sacrifice) and subsequent  resurrection that achieved our salvation (Romans 5:10; Ephesians 1:7).

·  Scripture is clear that salvation is the gracious, undeserved gift of God (Ephesians 2:5, 8) and is only available through faith in Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12).

How do we receive salvation?

We are saved by faith alone.

A. First, we must hear the gospel—the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection (Ephesians 1:13).

B. Then, we must believe—fully trust the Lord Jesus (Romans 1:16). This involves  repentance, a changing of mind about sin and Christ (Acts 3:19), and calling on the name of the Lord (Romans 10:9-10, 13).

A definition of the Christian doctrine of salvation would be:

“The deliverance, by the grace of God, from eternal punishment for sin which is granted to those who accept by faith God’s conditions of repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus.”

Salvation is available in Jesus alone (John 14:6; Acts 4:12) and is  dependent on God alone for provision, assurance, and security.

JESUS THE ONLY WAY TO HEAVEN.

Jesus is not just a good way to heaven.  He's the ONLY way to heaven.

Acts 4:12

"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

BIBLICAL FOUNDATION

ALL ARE SINNERS

 Romans 3:10-12

As it is written:  "There is none righteous, no, not one;  11 There is none who                         understands; There is none who seeks after God. 12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who  does good, no, not one."

THE LOVE OF GOD

John 3:16-18

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have  everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is   condemned already,  because  he has not believed in the  name of the only  begotten Son of God.”

ARE THERE STEPS to SALVATION?

The Bible only presents One STEP to salvation.

When the Philippian jailer asked Paul,

“What must I do to be saved?” Paul responded, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved” (Acts 16:30-31).

Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Savior of our lives is the ONLY “step” to salvation.

The message of the Bible is abundantly clear.

1. We have all sinned against God (Romans 3:23).

2. Because of our sin, we deserve to be eternally separated from God (Romans 6:23).

3. Because of His love for us (John 3:16), God took on human from and died in our place, taking the punishment that we deserve.

4. (Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21).

5. God promises forgiveness of sins and eternal life in heaven to all who receive, by grace through faith, Jesus Christ as Savior John 1:12; 3:16; 5:24; Acts 16:31).

SAMPLE PRAYER TO JESUS FOR SALVATION

"Dear Jesus, I believe that You died for me and rose again on the third day.  I confess to You that I am a sinner. I need Your love and               forgiveness. Come into my life, forgive my sins and give me eternal life.        I confess You now as my Lord. Thank You for my

salvation! I walk in Your peace and joy from this day forward. Amen."
